Vintage Shopping 101
by Erika Dykstra

You heard it straight from Marissa's mouth on a recent episode: "Vintage is very in right now." And we couldn't agree more. Why wear a 1970s-inspired bohemian slip dress, when you could flaunt the real thing? In a world where yesterday's fashions have a habit of becoming today's hottest trends, going vintage is the way to go.

In lots of ways, vintage shopping is like a treasure hunt; which makes it more fun than a jaunt to the mall, but also a bit more difficult. So before you hit the second-hand shops, bone up with our quick tutorial.

Keep an Open Mind
You never know what you're going to find at a vintage shop: a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress; a Louis Vuitton clutch bag; a vintage pair of Dior pumps. It may be winter, but if you find a flawless summer sun dress, don't pass it up. You can't control when a vintage find is found, and by the time the Fahrenheit rises, the dress will be long gone.

Alter It
You nabbed the find of your century: a stunning Prada mini-dress circa 1969. But alas, it's a size too big, and you'd prefer it be a micro instead of a mini. Before you place it back on the rack, consider taking it to a tailor. A few snips, nips and tucks and you could be turning heads in Prada.

Quality Control
The clothes you're buying have been worn before, and it's possible that they may be in a more than "gently used" condition. So before you buy, complete a thorough inspection: count the buttons, check that seams and hems are intact, scan the lining for holes and tears, and make sure zippers are zipping. Imperfections do not have to be a deal breaker, just remember to figure the amount you'll be shelling out for repairs into the total cost of the garment, and then decide if it's worth it.

Make a Day of It
Perusing the racks in a vintage shop takes patience and time. Unlike the well-merchandised shops in your local mall, vintage shops are usually lined with racks lacking consistent organization. Be thorough in your sifting, because the rack you blow through too quickly may contain your hidden treasure.
