The Bubble Skirt
by Erika Dykstra

Winter's trendiest skirt? It's gotta be the bubble. From tweeds to taffetas, the knee-length bubble skirt was a standout at the winter ‘05 runway shows, and has since been spotted everywhere from high school hallways to Hollywood red carpets. Rachel Bilson was recently photographed in a shimmery ivory and gold style; while designer Stella McCarntery included versions in her highly publicized, and much sought after, limited edition line for retail chain H & M.

Hugely popular in the 1950s, a classic bubble skirt sits tight on the waist, is fitted through the hips, and then puffs out like a balloon before tapering in again with a band at the knee. Devotees of this chic, traditional style will love this version from up-and-coming, New York-based designer Gina Michele.

Updated versions of the bubble skirt have more of a whimsical, ‘80s-esque flare. They retain the slim fitted-top, as well as the trademark poof, but instead of narrowing back at the knee, these fresh varieties include a fun, bulbous hem as well. Fans of this fresh party skirt will adore the dressy designs by Laundry, and Chloe, or this more casual look by Necessary Objects for The O.C..

How to wear the look? The bubble skirt makes a strong statement, so the trick is not to overwhelm it. Instead, keep the rest of your attire simple and let the skirt standout. Try a slim fitting sweater and a solid-colored pair of pumps, or a sheer, minimally adorned tank with round-toe ballerina flats.
