Street-Skimming Skirts
by Erika Dykstra

Skirts are sweeping the nation ... literally. This season, hemlines have fallen so low that they are actually scraping the boardwalks of Cape Cod, the sidewalks of Chicago, the sands of Laguna Beach, and just about everywhere in between. Comfy, practical and oh-so-feme, we say ... sweep on!

Bohemian chic is red hot, and shows no signs of cooling this season. Join the party when you pair a white, street-skimming peasant skirt with a bright, solid colored tank and super-flat gold sandals. Top off the look with wooden bangles, a long, chunky coral and gold necklace and gold, shoulder-grazing earrings (ingwa; melero).

Want to dress like a celebrity? Try on one of the ultra-long skirts from Chick, Nicky Hilton's clothing line. Sister Paris - along with a bevy of other celebs - has been photographed sashaying through Hollywood in this bright and oh-so-long skirt. We love the color fade from light to dark because it gives the skirt a layered look, but without the bulk of layers (Bohemian Skirt by Nicky Hilton, Kitson).

Prefer the tropics to the city? Sheer, loose-fitting skirts are perfect for humid days and sultry nights. Pair one with your bikini to create a casual-yet-sophisticated après-swim look (Free People Island Gauze Skirt).

But if you're looking forward to cooler temperatures, seek out a skirt in an autumnal hue like rust or cranberry, a skirt with rich satin ribbon detailing, layers, or a heavier fabric like cashmere or corduroy. Complete the look with a crochet sweater vest and a pair of cowboy boots (Anthropologie, Bebe).
