Wrap It Up: Head Scarves
by Erika Dykstra

What do Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O., Mischa Barton and Jessica Simpson have in common? Besides the obvious - beauty, fame and the adoration of incredibly handsome men - all four fashion icons have shared a cerebral affinity for scarves.

This flirty, whimsical accessory is back in vogue. Want to dive head-first into the scarf craze? Read on to learn how.

The Basics

Drape a rectangular scarf long-ways across the top of your head. Knot the scarf at the nape of your neck letting the tails hang long. Wear your hair loose, or pull it into a relaxed and messy ponytail at the base of the neck. Either way, leave at least a little hair peeking out of the front, with loose bangs and wispy strands.

Keep It On

If your hair is particularly heavy, or especially straight, you might have trouble keeping silkier scarves in place. Avoid using bobby pins or hair clips, inevitably they will end up peeking out, ruining the look of effortless elegance you spent so much time trying to create. Instead, try tying the scarf a little tighter or a little looser. Sometimes, if a scarf is too tight, it will pop off the back, alternatively, if it's too loose, it may just slide on out. Rest assured, there's a perfect tension for every head shape and hair type. Experiment a bit to find what works best for you.

Advanced Options

For a great how-to on tying your scarf (and not just on your head), Hermes.com offers this great two-section downloadable booklet, Playtime with Your Scarf. Make sure you download both parts, and start tying one on.
