Trendy Tunics
by Erika Dykstra

Tunic? Or not tunic? This year, that's not even a question.

The tunic is to 2005 as mesh tanks (a la Madonna) were to 1985, as flannel button downs (a la Kurt Cobain) were to 1995. And although the long, light weight and loose-fitting garment dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, the tunic is back as this year's without-a-doubt, must-have item.

Whatever style you choose - embroidered, beaded, long or short sleeve - tunics of all types are en vogue this season, and here are four ways to wear 'em.

Don It Over Denim
Sport a tunic on the top and a pair of tight fitting jeans on the bottom. Since tunics are long - hitting at the hip or lower - pull on a pair without any ornamentation like flap pockets or rhinestones. This will avoid any unnecessary bumps or lumps, and keep your look slim and lean.

Rock It at the Beach
Après sand and surf? You could throw a denim mini and boy beater over your bikini, but that look is so 2004. Instead, toss on a dress-length tunic. For an uber-trendy look, pair your new beach cover-up with Grecian super-flat sandals (yet another summer must-have).

Belt It
Slung low around the hips, the belt-over-tunic is a classic way to wear the garment. This season, try a long satin sash in a complementary hue - like turquoise over coral, or deep violet over lavender - or a long gold rope placed over any color at all. One word of caution: This look can make even the skinniest gals appear larger, so it's best reserved for those size 6 and under.

Glam It Up
Dolling up for a night on the town? Dazzle 'em with a sexy, low-cut tunic embellished with sequins. The more shimmer, the better. Look for sparkles down the V-neck, round the cuffs, and even dancing near the hem. Pair this after-dark tunic with a pair of long white pants, distressed denim jeans, or even a hip-hugging skirt.

Try these: Old Navy, Neiman Marcus, BCBG, Nordstrom
