Spring's Sloppy Satin
by Erika Dykstra

Fashion Week signaled the arrival of satin bows and sashes, and sloppy has never looked so chic. Up and down the runways, the ribbons were casually looped around heads, waists, ankles and more.

Your first stop? The fabric store. Spools of ribbon in an assortment of colors, widths and textures are waiting to be spun out and wrapped around you. Sound easy? It is! But here are a few tips to get you started.

Buy ribbons long. Really long. Like six-feet long. Tie one in your hair, weave one through your belt loops, or sling one low on your hips. But wherever you place it, be sure the ends hang down dramatically.

Go wide. 1 1/2 inch ribbons look great in your hair; 3-inch ribbons make dramatic sashes and neck wraps.

Think color! Bright hues are hot this season. Go for a golden yellow, aqua blue, hot pink or sunset orange. And don't try too hard to make it match. Instead, compliment your outfit with an unexpected burst of color, like pairing a thick lavender sash with a grass green shirtdress.

Snip the ends. You could cut them straight across, but what fun is that? Instead, fold the end of the ribbon in half lengthwise, then, with the scissors placed on the open edge of the fold, cut diagonally across the ribbon. When you unfold the ribbon, you'll have created a deep "V." Occasionally check the ends for fraying, and trim them as needed.

Keep it on. Satin is slippery, and bows made with satin ribbon tend to slide right out. To keep it tight whip out the needle and thread and secure the bow with a stitch or two. In a hurry? A few dabs of super glue will work just fine.

Most of all ... have fun, be creative, and don't over think it. Sloppy satin is supposed to be, well, sloppy. Relish in the ease and imperfection!
