The miniskirt's predictable and uninteresting style has hogged the limelight for far too long. Fortunately, relief's in sight: Designers are favoring a more classic, feminine look-a bit of backlash to all the candy-colored fluff, slink and bare-all fashions that have reigned past their prime.
This season, designers are embracing fashion inspiration from modest styles of eras past, with the 1950s being especially popular. The new look lowers hemlines to the knee, maybe adding a little fluff for a more feminine silhouette (although A-line and pencil skirts are coming back too-ever see Mommy Dearest?), and features some glammed-up, shimmery fabrics. Think Nicole Kidman, not Nicole Richie. Your new must-have is a shimmery, knee-length skirt, providing you with the new style but not boxing you in with only one look. Of course, this classic is never "out"-it's safe to assume it will be popular for a while, so invest in a good one (or lots!).
Your new and easy-to-wear skirt can be put together all sorts of ways, so have fun with it! Mix it with a fur shrug and your pointy high heels for a winter-glamorous effect, and don't forget the elbow-length gloves and this season's glittery brooch. Or try it with a classic sleeveless tank or graphic T-shirt and flip-flops for an OC-casual look. For a more polished style, match it with a cashmere twin-set, pearls and round-toed flats, to get a bit of that 1950s effect. Or just funk the whole thing up, and wear your slouchy cowboy boots and the popular tiny, fitted jacket with a great brooch on the lapel, and you will be leading the fashion fabulous.
The style now is moving into a more modest, classic look, but it's still very "in" to take a piece like the shimmery, knee-length skirt and wear it DIY-style. Do it completely different from what one would expect; it's way more fun that way! And this season, no matter which look you choose to create, add a hat! |
