So just what are the hottest fashions for guys this season, and what's it like working with the male fashion statements who make up "The O.C."? We caught up with "The O.C." fashion guru during a recent shopping spree to get the scoop.
Previously we talked about dressing the girls, now let's turn our attention to the guys of "The O.C." What are your plans for this season for Seth, Ryan and the rest of the guys?
KS: I just stopped at another small boutique in Malibu and found some great stuff for our boys. I love this James Perse corduroy blazer that I think just came out because we haven't seen them yet this season.
This is a really great piece for Adam Brody, who plays Seth. We could do a T-shirt and wear it open with jeans for the club scenes. Or if we wanted to dress it up, we could do a great collared shirt and a pair of his trousers and his Chuck Taylors or his Vans. So that was a great find for him.
I also found some great shirts for Ben McKenzie, who plays Ryan. They're simple, and again, James Perse. And there's a nice long-sleeved collared shirt, which for school might be nice with just a T-shirt underneath. I have it in both burgundy and bluish-gray, which are good colors for Ryan. And I found a simple Diesel long-sleeved collared shirt, which is also a great look for school, worn with a pair of his cords, perhaps, and his signature black boots.
Ryan and Seth are attending a private school in Orange County, so we try to keep the boys in collared shirts as much as possible, and they don't typically wear jeans at school.
Let's talk for a minute about Seth. How has he developed since the first season?
KS: Seth's character has grown so much. He's what we always call "geek chic" and I think he's made that pretty famous. But we've definitely bumped him up just a little bit of a notch since the early episodes.
He's a little bit more sophisticated, but we still do the polo shirts on him. We still do a lot of Ben Sherman on him. But I like the idea of doing some James Perse on him because it's [a] little more stylized, and I think he'll really respond to that. But we're not making over the geek, we're making geek chic.
What are some of the main lines for you when you're shopping for the guys?
KS: Lisa Kline Men is great. They've got great shirts for men and a great pants selection. We shop for all of the boys here, actually. We've had a lot of luck there with Adam and Ben or Seth and Ryan. We also shop there for Peter Gallagher, who plays Sandy, and we also get stuff there for Tate Donovan, who plays Jimmy.
Let's talk about Tate for a minute. His character is going through some major changes on the show, so will that be reflected in the clothes you choose for him in the second season?
KS: We do have a big episode coming up with Tate Donovan, so I wanna make sure he looks really spectacular, and I always have good luck with him. His character this season has moved onto a yacht, and he is coming back financially. If you remember, towards the end of last season he was a little more down with his wardrobe. So we've decided to spruce him up a little bit and get him back into the money, so to speak.
He's also a guy concerned with style. It's a very casual style. We love to do a shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a great pair of khaki pants, and he'll be barefoot on the yacht. If you pair up the khaki pants with a really beautiful men's shirt, I think that gives you a really nice look.
What trends are you seeing and using for the younger male cast members this season?
KS: We're doing vintage T-shirts on Ryan. He's really into the real vintage, so we try to go to vintage shops and seek those out for him, and we'll layer a short sleeve over a long sleeve T-shirt. Barney's does some fabulous stuff, Lisa Kline does fabulous shirts and, of course, Ben Sherman is a company we've used quite a bit. And then we do James Perse and Banana Republic as well.
One trend was a lot of collared shirts this year, and we always try to incorporate real vintage stuff this season. We're really trying to seek out some of the classic vintage, which is a lot of fun. We love all of these old vintage rocker T-shirts, but in front of the camera we have to be careful because we have to get the companies cleared and we're not always able to do that.
So as great as an old KISS T-shirt would be, and we know that the guys would love it, we would actually have to get clearance to see KISS on camera. So sometimes we're a bit limited in terms of what we can let in front of the camera.
In general, how involved are the male cast members in regards to their wardrobes?
KS: Adam Brody is really into his style, and they all are, actually. They're all really interested in style, and they all have really great opinions in the fittings, and we're always trying to keep it new and different and keep them excited about the clothing. Because we are a show about style and setting trends, I think all of them-on some level-are really interested, which makes it easier for me.
