Bring it on! The Spring Kickoff Pep Rally was a smashing success tonight and those cheerleaders really added a splash of OC style. Thanks to casting and our executive producer Josh Schwartz (a USC Alum) we got the real live USC cheerleading squad to come to the OC and strut their stuff. Turns out cheerleading competitions are all the rage nationally and there's reason why the half-time show is a must-see.
I put a call into Martha Selman at the National Cheerleaders Association and she told me the sport kicked off some time in the 1920s. It became official in 1948 when the NCA was created and the rest is history. She gave me a few fun factoids: The pom pom was invented in 1960 and it was the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders in the 1970s who really popularized the sport.
After doing a little research I realized the classic cheerleading costume was passé and that most girls wear more of a hip-hop inspired look. I made a quick call over to Cara Luttrell at Von Dutch and asked her to design some kickin' trucker caps with Harbor High's pirate logo. "We incorporated our ever popular 'Chris hat' that Justin Timberlake was the first to wear at the 2000 Grammy after-parties," she said. "Everyone is wearing that hat - Britney Spears, Madonna, JZ, Brandy, Usher and Halle Barry," she added.
For a super beachy feel, Leanne over at Roxy found us some sexy halter-style bikini tops in a Hawaiian print. Our friends at JFF whipped up some sassy custom burgundy skorts and - for that additional hot accessory - we combed Venice Beach for classic puka shell necklaces. You go girl! And how could I forget, for the added kicks and jumps, Nike sneakers completed the look.
So, all you cheerleaders out there, shake your booty and don't be afraid to infuse a little style for some good old-fashioned team spirit!!! |
