Getting That Summer Look

"The O.C." makeup department head, Joni Powell, explains how she created four different "beauty personalities" based on the female leads and their characters. In this installment, the discussion centers on the character Summer Roberts.

The Smoky-Eyed Beach Beauty

The type: "A beach girl who spends time on her makeup," notes Joni.
The how-to's: Start with Makeup For Ever's Mat Velvet Oil Free Foundation mixed with Chanel's Sheer Brilliance luminizer in "Sunkissed." Create smoky eyes by applying plum or gray or shadow to the eyelid, blending toward the crease. Smudge under lower lashes. Want even more drama? Line the inner eyelid with a matching eye pencil. Use Almay's One Coat Mascara in black, a few false lashes and Benefit's "Benetint"...Voilà!

Hot tip: Invest in a heated eyelash curler, ASAP. "It crimps lashes, opening the eye. I would never use mascara without it!" declares the expert.
