"The O.C." Prop Masters Get a Taste of Some Real Risky Business

The Quest for the Egg

When script 218 hit the desks for tonight's Risky Business themed episode, Ed Borash Jr., the property master knew it was going to be all about the egg. In the original 1983 film, the crystal egg was tossed into the air and Tom Cruise, the star of the film, did the famous slow motion dive to catch it. His mother later noticed that there was a hairline crack in the egg and the cat was out of the bag. The writers of the O.C. wrote the egg into the script and Borash knew he was on an immediate mission to find that egg. "I went right out and bought a copy of Risky Business and watched it," he said. He quickly found out that Warner Brothers made the movie and when he waited for the credits to roll, he noted that Richard Ackerman was the property master. The sleuthing was going well.

First call to the Warner Brothers Museum: no egg. Second call to Warner Brothers property closet: no egg. Third call to the union to track down Richard Ackerman: "He's retired. But you're in luck. His son is a prop maker and his name is Jeff Ackerman." Borash put in a quick call to Jeff Ackerman who
returned the call promptly to let him know that there are only two people in the world that have those eggs - Tom Cruise and the Director of Risky Business. "I couldn't believe it," he said with a sigh. "But then he told me that his father had given him the prototypes for the original egg." Borash said he was
elated.

Ackerman sent over the two eggs, one a ten pounder and one a thirteen pounder, made of clear acrylic. Borash decided to go with the ten pounder. For the shot in tonight's episode, Mike and John, the prop assistants who work on set, heaved the egg like a shot put and a group of grips on the other end caught it with a furniture blanket. It took twenty throws to establish the shot. The egg that we see Ryan throw and Seth catch is called the "stunt egg" and it was a hollowed out acrylic egg made by the folks over at The Hand Prop Room. According to Borash the "stunt egg" was light as a feather. "If we had gone out and had that original Risky Business egg made it would have cost between 5 and 6 thousand dollars," he said. "Instead, it was just a small rental fee and It was nice that we had a little piece of the original movie on our show.
