Four seasons. Ninety-two episodes. Lots of death. Lots of hooking up. Lots of emo-pop. One 30-year old with a smile on his face.
Four years after he became the youngest person in television history to sell a drama to a major network, Josh Schwartz says goodbye to his baby boy, The O.C. Neither remorsed or elated, Schwartz just seems ready for what's next. In the meantime, he sat down with The O.C. Insider to talk about the show's history, failures, successes and, above all, what he is most appreciative of — the fans.
— Intro by Mike Metz
Favorite On Screen Moments...
- Sandy drives Ryan home leaving Marissa in the driveway at the end of THE PILOT.
- Seth and Summer lose their virginity to each other in THE HEARTBREAK.
- Seth / Summer Spiderman kiss in THE RAINY DAY WOMEN.
- Ryan and Taylor share their first kiss in THE METAMORPHISIS.
Favorite Off Screen Memory...
The filming of the pilot was incredibly exciting. With Doug Liman directing, it was amazing to see the Cohens and the Coopers come to life for the first time.
My number two favorite off-screen memory was meeting George Lucas.
Any characters you wish never made it onto the show?
I would have to say poor, sad Johnny.
Favorite O.C. quote...
"Welcome to the OC, bitch!" — Luke (THE PILOT)
"What if I did rent a homosexual for the evening and pay him with rare collectibles from Asian cinema? " — Taylor (THE SUMMER BUMMER)
Was there a storyline you were interested in doing but it never saw the light of day?
We never got around to that Ryan / Summer romance...
Season 4 resurgence with the fans and the critics - do you think The OC had stories to tell past this season or was it time to go?
This feels like the perfect time to bring the story to a close. It's a rare gift to end a show on a creative high note. It wasn't necessarily our choice, but it was the perfect time for The OC to end.
Is the prospect of a reunion show completely out of the question?
Expect in 20 years, "The OC: The Movie" with Colin Farrell playing Ryan and Jamie Foxx playing Seth.
What are the plans for the DVDs? Any chance we will get a S1-4 DVD set?
In May, the Season 4 DVD is coming out. In the fall, there will be a complete series box set with some new goodies included.
Any thoughts on where each of the main characters would be 5 or 10 years from now?
You'll just have to watch and see...
Anything to leave the fans with?
Thank you so much for watching. These past four years have been an incredible experience. I hope one day, when you're in your car and Phantom Planet's "California" comes on the radio, you'll remember the Cohens, the Coopers and the County fondly.
